Miami, Florida --- Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Ranking Member
of the Foreign Affairs Committee and a senior member of the Florida
Congressional Delegation, issued the following statement condemning
the dictatorial Castro regime for its continued imprisonment of Cuban
doctor and human rights activist Darsi Ferrer. Dr. Ferrer is being
detained at the Valle Grande prison in Havana.

Dr. Ferrer has been jailed for allegedly buying two bags of cement on
the black market without government permission. Dr. Ferrer’s wife,
Yusnaimi Jorge, and dissidents on the island all agree that the real
reason that he has been jailed is because of his protests against the
Castro regime on the International Day of Human Rights. Ms. Yusnaimi
Ferrer says her husband is in jail “because he dared to dream.”

Statement of Ros-Lehtinen:

“Only in the communist regime of the Castro brothers do the state
police arrive at ones’ home and tear down the door looking for
illegally bought bags of concrete. Only in Castro’s Cuba are freedom
seeking men and women thrown into jail for daring to speak out against
the total lack of the most basic fundamental human rights.

Dr. Ferrer was also beaten up by State security. His wife states that
she is very worried over his personal safety. Dr. Ferrer must be
immediately freed and the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of
American States (OAS) should take up his cause.

The position of the UN and the OAS shows that these organizations care
little about human rights and liberty and freedom. Rather they cater
to despots and tyrants who trample over the will of their people to
perpetuate their grip on power.

If these organizations really cared about human rights, then their
leaders should immediately board a plane to Havana, as they did in the
Honduran situation, and demand that the Castro brothers free Dr.
Ferrer and the other Cuban political prisoners languishing in Castro’s
jails. But that would be expecting too much from these organizations.”
